PLEASE DOWNLOAD PDF TO VIEW [link] - THIS JPG DOES NOT DO THIS PIECE JUSTICE!

Comments are much appreciated

This is quite possibly the hardest thing I have ever done.
It was extremely emotional to gather all of this information , and then assemble it. But I believe it has given me a better understanding of how I've gotten to where I am now.

This is the documentation of every intimate relationship I have ever had. The data spans 23 years.

This is my first shot at information design.

Total hours : round 80ish

Please take the time to download and view this, you may find it quite interesting.

The original is 32x24, so please zoom around the PDF to get the full effect.

As a note: I had considered removing the names before posting this, but decided it would not be proper of me to do so.

Notify me upon any use of this work.

Produced and designed with the help of my classmates and professor Phil Zelnar at Harrington College of Design in Chicago, IL

You're welcome about the fav.

You might take delight in hearing this song:

they might be giants - 88 lines about 44 women

i bet youtube has it. if not, just read the lyrics.

That is an amazing compilation of history (I guess that's what you could call it). It's strange to look at a life laid out like that on a piece of paper. The design is amazing... it conveys information both quantitatively and qualitatively at the same time which is certainly not easy to do. Impressive visualization.

Hey! The download doesn't work anymore. And I would love to have a close look at your personal affairs. Acrobat reader shows this message: 'This viewer cannot decrypt this document'. Please let me know how to fix this. Greetings

Chelsea sound interesting.
I'd take Sarah, too.

Suggestions:
1) The time scale would be nice at the right side too. That way, it'd be easier to find out when you dated the girls at the right side instead of having to look aaaaaaaaall the way to the left.

2) Some earlier STD checks would've been good, would they? ;)

3) Never let any of "your girls" see this.

What about a template for gigolos? ;)

Cheers *FelixT

1) Good suggestion, I'll throw it on my list of stuff I need to do.
2) Yeah well, I thought I was invincible (never had a STD to this date by the way) :)
3) I know!!! I get scared sometimes.. Late at night..

I feel as a graph this is very cluttered and not that easy to understand with the small text used in some cases.

If your a graphic design major: please consider taking a typography class.

Thanks for your opinion.

The design is meant for print (32x24), the included PDF will solve the 'small text' you mentioned.

Excellent. It's great you had the time and the drive to post something like this. It is honestly excellent. Everything is very well presented, and I could understand the whole thing (Besides the break ups, which I hopefully interpreted fairly well). I'd like to maybe see an extended section to the side with stats such as "Number of relationships" - "Percent of relationships over 6 months" "Percent of engagements" Etc...

Great work though. Easy to understand. Vibrant colours. +Fav and +Watch.

Might end up making one myself (For personal use :P)

Excellent

Thanks Conexion.
If you check the bottom I actually did start to work up some of the statistics, but if you'd really like to see a totally analyzed breakdown I could see about doing that in the 2.0 version.

This is a great concept! As far as the information design side of things goes, my one suggestion would be to make the symbols stand on their own instead of requiring the viewer to look at each symbol in place, then move their eye to the legend to decipher it. It's an unnecessary step, as Tufte says.

This is a great concept, and the graphics are great.

However as a piece intending to convey information, it has a few challenges for the viewer.

A few suggestions:

The length of the icon bars have nothing to do with the actual duration of your relationship, which I believe is represented by the green stripes. So for example: wouldn't the meeting icon be at the beginning of the relationship? The break-up icon at the end?

As a conceptual exercise, blur your eyes a bit and look at the chart. Which relationships were the longest? Which were the most important? As it is, the chart seems to say you were involved with a girl from the time you were born until you were six years old... It also seems to say that you basically cheated on everyone you ever dated (since one girl's icons extend below the end of the previous girl). There should be something to pull the green bar together with the informational icons.

The chart implies a time component for some of the information icons. For example: when was the first kiss? When was the first sexual encounter? The icons imply their positions have something to do with those actual dates... however I'm guessing they in fact, do not.

Lastly, there is no actual reason the blue "emotional involvement" field extend below the women's names. If you'd like a suggestion, perhaps incorporate that field as a font color of the name, or as a background or border around all the icons?

Brian -

Thanks for taking the time to create an account here and comment on this. I appreciate the feedback.

I'm going to address each point you made in order.

First, the icons are arranged in order. Starting at the bottom, and working up the breakup at the top. I felt if they were in a descending order (meetup at top breakup at bottom) the flow of the chart would be a little staggered. The green on green play of icon and timeline would have further blurred out the relationship lengths.

My original workup (1st revision) accounted for this relaxation of 'icon space' and had the whole bar from beginning of relationship to end with a solid fill and instead of a green bar at the top, there was a line-graph to represent the time in each relationship. The feedback I received suggested that this was near impossible to understand without some verbal or visual cue, hence the stair-stepper graph you are presented with.

The icons cannot invade the green space, because the green represents a precisesly measured and graphed amount of time.

I don't expect to change this basic architecural component of the chart. However, I could pull one of the columns, and term in to define it as a measure of length.

You're the first to mention the time component implied by the icons - you'll notice their order remains consistent throughout the whole calendar, I did this purposefully to remove that component - Could you please expand on your statement.

The blue field, as it stands could be improved. I don't think I will be trying font weight - due to the vast difference in saturation, it wouldn't be consistent / readable throughout the names. A border / background shift might make the flow of the calendar get thrown off. . . It's something to really think about though.

I hope I didn't miss anything, and I look forward to your reply.

Very cool! Love the detail in it and especially that you chose not to reveal what the breakup icons mean. You can go through each one and reveal an impressively telling story.

What's the first one though on the left? Looks like you were 5?

Hi there,
Ah, well the interesting thing about this piece - Although your brain might want to tell you something shouldn't be right.. Everything has been double, triple, quadruple checked =p Yes, I was about 5 (exact age is on there) She was my kindergarten honey - Thought everyone had one of those?

Did you notice that you got featured in a german videoblog?

Am I right that there is no break-up symbol for reem, because you never met her but on the internet?

btw: Great project. I think about studying information design, too.

Thanks for showing me that link - Definitely interesting.

Nope, not right about Reem, kinda close.. but we did know each other in person.

I hope you do get into info design - I'm actually at school for a BFA in communication design, and I just happened to be able to convince my prof. to let me do this for a layout class.

It's maybe the most popular link-sharing blog here in Germany.

The problem with the info-design is that there are only two universities in Europe offering information design, wich makes it absolutely unknown for most employers...

But anyway - good luck for your future projects!

Wouldn't that be interesting? I just kind of brainstormed off on that. The world would be a lot more emotionally stable I think.. The drama queens would have to find something else to bitch about, maybe, just maybe it would be the end of drama and pity parties.. One can only hope.
